Thanks for your patience with us as we've persisted through the challenges of establishing this project. We are glad to finally be able to see the light (or hopefully the garden full of an abundance of food for the community) at the end of the tunnel.

Yankalilla Community Garden June 2025 update
Establishment of infrastructure within the garden continues thus we must admit we are a bit behind with the establishment of winter veg
Although all 6 raised garden beds are now filled with soil, compost, plants or seeds and have irrigation to them – not that we need that at present Both the Culinary and Medicinal Herb gardens are also expanding nicely
We also had our first harvest of Horseradish. That was ‘interesting’ processing it!
Within the shelter there is now a very nice table and bench which we purchased via a grant and was installed by Council staff. We all appreciate a sit down for a chat and cuppa at the end of our working sessions
The erection of an eastern wall is almost completed. This wall is to provide some protection from the winds in that direction
Council continues to do works intermittently around the gardens such as the connection of electricity/lighting and the construction of a stone wall. Council have also installed a Defibrillator within the shelter
The compost we made last year is absolutely fabulous! More has been made and we have started making our own fermentation of compost tea
We are also hoping an appropriate Grant will come our way soon to apply for shelter guttering and a rain water tank
There appears to be more interest in the garden lately. Even little helpers. Here’s hoping it continues
Our regular gardening sessions are the 1st Wednesday and 3rd Sunday of each month. During winter 10am-12 noon.
All are welcome

Yankalilla Community Garden April 2025 update
The summer garden was wonderfully productive, with many people visiting for a healthy dose of tomatoes (some even made sauces), to ongoing zucchinis’ and some who just wanted a leaf or 2 of silverbeet for their dinner.
Due to the establishment of the Diprotodon, the council have been unable to undertake the inground works and building of the stone wall at the garden. It will, however happen.
So in the mean time we have been purchasing items that we have a $10,000 grant for. These include a nice big pile of compost, a fold up stainless-steel bench and a fixed one, seating for the shelter, timber & oil for the slated side of the shelter, storage shelving and various wonderful gardening tools which have been hung up in the tool shed in an orderly fashion.
There continues to be an ongoing ‘establishment’ of the garden with infrastructure setup while food happily grows in the background. Luckily, we have a core team of volunteers who willingly assist with every aspect. The newest one being a plumber!
One of our core volunteers has worn many hats over the years, including much involvement in various Community gardens. With his skills and knowledge, we are looking at the directions in which the garden could potentially develop. We would maintain some of the usual food/plants for the community, then add in unusual or Heirloom varieties and Medicinal plants/herbs. With workshops and demonstrations to educate people about their uses. Other concepts we have are Seed saving, Nutrient rich food growing and DIY garden inputs. These would be led by individual Special Interest Groups.
As a lot of people in our local area have gardens themselves, we are looking outside the box as to what would inspire more of our community to be involved in the garden and enhance their lives, their health and their environment.
